There's something wrong with the residents of flat 7...

Flat number seven is down the hall from me. I had never seen the residents before, but I'd heard all kinds of strange noises from inside whenever I had to walk past their door on my way out the building. I always got the strange feeling like they were watching me through the spy hole in their door.

Then things started to change.

As I was unlocking my door after work, I heard the door to number 7 close. I felt paranoid, but I assumed they had a reason to open the door and look out for a moment, so I thought no more about it. Only, this started to happen every time I came home from work. As I was prepared for it, I managed to see the door open while I was fumbling with my keys. It opened just enough for someone to look out, but I could see nothing but darkness beyond the doorway.

Each time this happened, the door was opened a little more until I could get the faint impression of eyes staring out from the darkness. I called out a weak 'hello' and the door was closed in reply.

Last week was the final time.

As I was unlocking my door, I again watched as the door was opened, this time wider. The impression of eyes staring was stronger this time, and an uncomfortable sense of danger came over me. In a panic, I focused on unlocking and opening my door as I heard footsteps hurriedly coming towards me. I threw myself through the door and slammed it shut behind me and turned the lock. I couldn't see anything through the spy hole, but I swear I could hear breathing behind the door, as if from a large animal.

It took me a couple of days to find the courage to leave the flat after that, and after seeing signs of someone else moving in to number seven, I was able to get back to normal. I'll never know if it was just my imagination, or I narrowly escaped danger.

I still have nightmares about it.
